Champlevé Candle Holder

This unique, one-of-a-kind copper candle holder is a stunning example of the Champlevé enamelling technique. The base features etched copper, and once the rest of the design is formed and soldered together in multiple stages, vibrant enamel is fired into the shallow trough created by the etching. And, like a fingerprint, this etching creates a naturally unique pattern which varies the reflections of the light through the glass. The base of the piece is also enamelled to ensure stability and add beauty.

The beautiful red-orange colours are achieved through the use of transparent enamel, allowing the warm copper hue to shine through. The contrasting black is created by applying liver-of-sulphur to the copper before fixing it with a protective wax and then polishing. The precise craftsmanship and multiple firings involved in this design result in a durable and stunning functional art piece that highlights the beauty of this ancient method.
